First, id like to say something about myself... im from cebu, philippines.
Just want to let you know guys of my worries. I recieved an email stating that i won in the lottery. I played along at first, thinking at first that it was just a blessing in disguise, cos i also remember one time i played a free lotto...but i just cant remember the site.. so i was thinking that this is it & its for real. So i replied to the email, saying, how can i claim the winning prize. And so the scammer also replied, that i will provide some personal details like, name, address & tel. And so i did!.. Sad .. & the next thing they say, is they were asking for my bank acct. details, which i didnt give... (why should I).. so i conclude that it was indeed a scam.. and surfing through the net, i found this forum, and in fact found a similar letter from this link. http://forum.scampatrol.org/viewtopic.php?t=178

I am worried on the information i provide. Can someone help me on this?

il just post the email i received, so that others will know also, and will somehow put an end to this. here it is...

Hi Shiftleft,

Welcome to Scampatrol forum. You were right to be suspicious as the letter is definitely a fraud. The letters they send are based on standard formats which makes it easy for us to recognise a scam letter at a glance. You will also see they used a free email address which is another sign of a scam. They ask you to keep it a secret - so what have they got to hide?
I could point out that "Zebbra" is no way to spell "Zebra" in the name of their own fake lottery company... but that would be cruel. Wink

Please ignore any future emails claiming that you have won lotteries. I know you said that you entered an online lottery, but as a rule you cannot win a lottery you never entered. You should also ignore any attempts they make to contact you.

If you stop all communications with them, they will get bored very quickly and move on. As long as you don't wind them up and anger them you have nothing to fear.

It's a numbers game for them, they will simply put their effort into trying to scam someone new.

You might get the occasional email asking you about any delay or why you haven't replied, simply ignore, or better still, block their email address from your system.

Thanks for your input jayjacq but as Solitary Man points out this is an old thread. If you want to discuss this topic its best to start a new thread which a link referring back to the old one.

The reason we have the rule about thread necromany is that members who posted in the original thread may no longer be around and therefore you may not receive a response to your post.

Thread necromany is covered in this section of the site guidelines:

Quote:
Please avoid thread necromany (that is: posting in a thread that has been inactive for several months to bump it back to the top again). Old threads will usually little relevance anymore. Also, members that posted in it may not be around anymore. If you really want to bring up an old discussion again because you have something of value to add, post a new thread and put a link in it to the old thread. That way people do not have to read through all the old posts to see what is new.

You will probably want to read the whole of the site guideline as it will tell you what is and what isn't acceptable on this site.
